The MA Tax Credit for Film and Video Production

For businesses that do work with companies in excesses of 50,000 dollars, the MA tax incentives program may be right for you. We thought it be helpful for businesses to put the MA tax credit information (pulled from MA’s Film website) all in one simpler location. Massachusetts has an excellent tax incentives programs that does not expire until 1/1/2023. Let’s look at some of the highlights. Everything is very straightforward and of course, all videos must be made in MA, either the entire film or part of it.

Sales Tax Exemption

There is a 25% production credit, a 25% payroll credit, and a sales tax exemption for companies that spend at least $50,000.00 in total production costs in MA and this also applies to accredited film school students.

Additionally, the company must either spend more than 50% of a motion picture’s total production expenses in Massachusetts OR shoot more than 50% of a motion picture’s principal photography in Massachusetts. Check out, MAFilm.Org, which goes into greater details on how to be eligible

Not Eligible

Companies that are not eligible include news, sports, game shows, fundraiser productions, as well as a few others.  Payments to high salary employees ($1 Million or higher) are also not eligible.

New Report

This past May, Boston Magazine reported on a new study which highlighted the financial benefits of the incentive programs. The report, titled “Economic Impacts of the Massachusetts Film Tax Incentive Program,” upheld the notion that the program creates thousands of jobs for locals while generating millions for the state of Massachusetts.
