Boston Fire Department training videoThis summer we had the unprecedented opportunity to work with the Prestigious Boston Fire Department. We shot in multiple locations in and around Boston at various fire houses. Including Cambridge, Jamaica Plain and Dorchester. We interviewed many Fire Fighters, Chiefs and the Commissioner.

The final video is divided into chapters featuring testimonials, instructional tutorials and a simulation. The video below is only the simulation. For time time constraints and viewer attention spans. This chapter was a little more visual stimulating. The simulation was shot on Moon Island with 5 cameras. including one helmet cam and an infrared camera provided by the BFD. Boston Fire Department training video

Ben McElroy has incorporated his Limited Liability Company (LLC), McElroy Films, to further the mission of making professional high definition film and video more accessible to businesses, nonprofit organizations and the public. McElroy Films is affordable without cutting corners. McElroy uses his resource pool of industry professionals to create the right team for each project, allowing for a high quality, custom product at an affordable price.

“I started this business because I have a passion for film and video. I like to work with people, figure out their vision and bring that to life. Video production has been around for years and has been very expensive up until this point. The niche I’m filling is the ability to offer inexpensive video without sacrificing on quality.” said McElroy.

McElroy Films produces each project using professional equipment. Tapeless HD cameras combine excellent picture quality with faster processing. Exporting to DVD, Blu-ray and the web is done with lightning precision, getting video to potential customers, donors or friends and family faster. Professional lighting and both wired and wireless audio are the same ones used for professional television, movies and sporting events. McElroy Films uses equipment previously found mainly on television and movie sets, such as GlideCams and dollies, to create trendy cinematic style of shooting.

Every project is customizable from start to finish and budgeted according to the client’s needs. McElroy translates his knowledge of video technology into understandable terms and guides clients toward possibilities they may not have known existed.

McElroyFilms_Studio_02_200“Being young energetic professionals in the video industry we see things differently. We see videos not just constrained to DVD. With social networking sites on the rise, more companies and organizations are turning to online video. Businesses need to get on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and embed videos into websites and blogs.” explained McElroy. “People aren’t going to be picking up a newspaper or flipping through the yellow pages. They’re going to be on search engines such as Yahoo, Bing and Google. Businesses need to drive traffic to their websites and get people to stay there and interact. They need to make sure they catch viewers’ attention. What better way to do all that than by adding online video content?”

McElroy introduced a new website to reflect this excitement and forward thinking ambition. It is designed to appeal to both video professionals and the general public. The website has sections for each of the company’s services, a Word Press Blog filled with tips and news, a Press Room with journalist resources and McElroy TV, an online video channel powered by MediaSilo. Kick Start Media customized the site and Studio Press designed the website’s template. It is interactive and easy to navigate. The McElroy Films website is now featured in StudioPress’ showcase and on MediaSilo’s website.

McElroy Films 3D Logo

McElroy Films is very pleased to announce our new 2009 3D corporate logo. We contacted Will Cavanagh, a graphics design artist working at National Boston to undertake the task.

Will was kind enough to discuss his experience and workflow:

After discussing the animation with Ben McElroy, I spent some time conceptualizing how the logo should build.  I decided on a grand build into an elegent resolve, that relied on showing off the geometry of the logo in an abstract way to engage the viewer.  I drew some rough boards, and then began modelling the logo in 3d.  I used Adobe Illustrator to clean up the logo file, remove unneeded elements, and prep it to import into 3d.  I then modeled the filmstrip bit from the vector art in Maxon Cinema 4D, and extruded the text.

mf_3d_logo_2009_001I animated the camera move roughly, and then worked on designing materials and lighting to enhance the scene. I tweaked the camera animation, and added additional cameras (for shots used in the build) and animated them as well.  I used Maxon Cinema 4D NET Render to render the scene across an 11-machine render farm of 8-core Mac Pros.  This additional render power allowed me to use GI with HDRI lighting in the scene to add softness in the shadows and realism to the reflections, specularity and caustics.  I rendered the scenes into 24 seperate passes, as image sequences.

I pulled the passes I wished to use for composite into Adobe After Effects, and using the multi-pass output from 3d tweaked the appearance of the materials to my liking.  I used Object Buffer alpha channels to isolate the alpha of the logo elements from the scene, and to replace the background with color mattes.  For part of the animation I used the Trapcode Horizon plugin for AE to allow the background gradation to match the camera movement pulled from 3d.  Since C4D is able to export camera and scene information to After Effects, matching the camera movement from 3d in composite is painless, without having to work in a heavier-duty compositor like The Foundry’s Nuke.

mf_3d_logo_2009_003I added lens flares using Knoll Light Factory, and also added vignetteing and some additional toning to the composition in AE.  To end the animation, I built a transition from the 3d animation to a 2d logo resolve using a tweaked vector art version of the McElroy Films logo.
